I’ve often wondered how members of a band come together to create something as meaningful and time-proven as a song. Anyone who’s ever collaborated on something as mundane as a high school science experiment knows how difficult it can be to work in a group. So how do individual performers weave together lyrics and melodies from their own journeys, viewpoints, letdowns, and triumphs into a single, cohesive offering?
Alex Rose of the popular alternative rock band, Minus The Bear, helped illuminate the process.
In addition to Alex (keyboards, backing vocals), Minus The Bear is composed of David Knudson (guitar), Jake Snider (guitar, lead vocals), and Cory Murchy (bass). Each member of the band contributes a musical aesthetic, and is separately influenced by different bands. Alex Rose explains how the band creates a song, from idea to recording, arriving at a mutually satisfying sound and lyrical message.
